Serial Console / Boot Log

You insert the µSD card with newest image, apply power to your Openvario and wait a few seconds for bootlogo or Tuxes to appear, but nothing happens …

Even without any screen connected we can check on the serial console if the system boots. Remove the housing lower cover to get access to the UART0 pins on the Cubieboard and connect jumper wires for RX, TX and GND to a 3.3V TTL serial to USB converter. Do not connect anything to the Vcc pin! Since you access UART0 directly on the Cubieboard this works even if you messed up the level converters on the adapterboard, the RJ45 board or the ribbon cable connecting them.

If your adapterboard and RJ45 board work there is no need to open the housing, you can access the serial console on the UART0 RJ45 connector. Use a serial cable for a logger (Volkslogger, Flarm, etc.) and a Nullmodem cable/adapter (the orange colored part in the picture below) to connect to your computer.

Find the COM port of your serial to USB adapter and open a terminal on your computer (Hyperterm or Putty on Windows, screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200 on Linux). Apply power to the Cubieboard and check the boot log.

Now you can see your Openvario booting even without LCD attached
